(CHICAGO) – Michael K. Murphy, D.O., founding dean of the William Carey University College of Osteopathic Medicine, was re-elected to the American Osteopathic Association (AOA) Board of Trustees during its recent annual business meeting in Chicago. Dr. Murphy is an AOA board-certified family physician.

“I am honored to be selected to represent my peers,” said Dr. Murphy. “As a founder of a new college of osteopathic medicine, I am witnessing the growth of the osteopathic medical profession first hand and I look forward to introducing our future osteopathic medical students to the AOA.”

After earning his osteopathic medical degree in 1973 from what is now known as the A.T. Still University- Kirksville (Mo.) College of Osteopathic Medicine, Dr. Murphy completed an internship and residency in family practice at Naval Hospital Camp in Pendleton, Calif.

Following a distinguished 30-year military career in the U.S. Navy, Dr. Murphy accepted the position of dean of the Des Moines (Iowa) University— College of Osteopathic Medicine in 1998. Prior to joining William Carey, Dr. Murphy served as an associate dean at Pikeville (Ky.) College School of Osteopathic Medicine.

The American College of Osteopathic Family Physicians awarded him his fellowship in 2000 and Distinguished Fellowship in 2006. The Association of Osteopathic Directors and Medical Educators awarded him a fellowship in 2006. Aside from his involvement on the national level, Dr. Murphy has been an active member of state and local osteopathic medical organizations. He served as delegate and president of both the Kentucky Osteopathic Medical Association and the Association of Military Osteopathic Physicians and Surgeons.

Dr. Murphy has been a member of the AOA since 1969 and served as first vice president, second vice president and AOA Trustee from 1991 until 1999. During that time he served as military representative and chaired various committees and task forces. In the history of the AOA, Dr. Murphy is one of the few members of the Board of Trustees to return to service after leaving for a period of time.

The AOA proudly represents its professional family of more than 67,000 osteopathic physicians (D.O.s); promotes public health; encourages scientific research; serves as the primary certifying body for D.O.s; is the accrediting agency for osteopathic medical colleges; and has federal authority to accredit hospitals and other health care facilities.
