More than 500 delegates representing osteopathic state medical associations, specialty societies, interns, residents and students from throughout the country convened July 17-19 to set organizational policies and elect new officers during the AOA's annual business meeting in Chicago. Delegates adopted positions on a number of health care issues of concern to patients and physicians, including support for prohibiting raw milk sales and recognizing physically active video games as an element of a patient’s fitness and therapeutic exercise routine. In addition, delegates installed Larry A. Wickless, D.O., an AOA board-certified internist of Farmington Hills, Mich., as the AOA's 113th president. Karen J. Nichols, D.O., an AOA board-certified internist of Oak Brook, Ill., was elected the AOA's president-elect, which puts her on path to become the organization's first woman president in 2010.
