Research and Grants

The American Osteopathic Association (AOA) recognizes that the advancement of quality scientific research is a critical part of its overall mission to improving American health care through the promotion of osteopathic medicine. The Council on Research provides guidance and oversight for the research development activities of the AOA:

AOA Research Conference - A national forum for osteopathic physicians, scientific researchers, residents, interns, and students at osteopathic colleges. The Conference allows researchers to disseminate their research findings, to discuss their mutual interests and concerns, and to collaborative relationships.

Annual Research Awards - Recognize the essential contribution of research to the profession. Special awards have been established to publicly recognize those individuals whose work has furthered the principles and practice of osteopathic medicine through research.

AOA Research Grants and Fellowships - The American Osteopathic Association has funded original research within the osteopathic profession for many years. The purpose of the research program is to:

  • Generate the conduct of research that continues to further our understanding of the efficacy and –mechanisms of Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine (OMM) and Osteopathic Principles and Practices (OPP).
  • · Develop and support the quality and capacity of osteopathic research through support and training for researchers, in collaboration with the Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine and other osteopathic institutions.
