March 20, 2012:
The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has extended their reprieve for implementing HIPAA 5010 standards until June 30, 2012. While providers have made excellent progress in updating their practice management systems to be HIPAA-compliant, the CMS believes remaining challenges warrant the extension to ensure that all entities can complete the transition.
While no enforcement action will be taken against non-compliant entities, providers are urged to continue their transition efforts. The Jan. 1 compliance date had originally been delayed to March 31.
