Submit 10 eRx Events to Avoid 2014 Penalty

June 17, 2013:

June 30 is the deadline to submit at least 10 e-prescribing (eRx) events or request an eRx hardship exemption; those who don't comply risk being penalized 2% on Medicare Part B FFS claims in 2014. It's all part of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) Electronic Prescribing (eRx) Incentive Program, which rewards physicians and other eligible professionals who e-prescribe and penalizes those who don't. Here's a quick overview:

  • You must submit at least 10 eRx events using CPT code G8553 or request a hardship exemption by June 30, 2013, or your practice may be penalized 2% in 2014.

  • You can earn a 0.5% eRx incentive payment by e-prescribing at least 25 times by Dec. 31, 2013.

  • Whether you're trying to avoid the penalty, qualify for the bonus, or both, the AOA recommends submitting a few more eRx events than required in case some don't go through.
