Meaningful Use Made Easy

As part of the Medicare and Medicaid EHR Incentive Programs, physicians earn additional payments for using EHRs to improve patient care. The program requires eligible physicians to demonstrate that they are “meaningfully using” their EHRs. To be a meaningful EHR user, you must meet three requirements:

  • Use certified EHR technology in a meaningful manner (i.e. computerized physician order entry)

  • Participate in electronic exchange of health information to improve quality of care

  • Submit information on clinical quality measures to CMS (or to a state if it is a Medicaid program)

Meaningful use has three stages. To proceed to the next stage, you must successfully demonstrate meaningful use according to the criteria of the stage you're currently in. Each stage has benchmarks that must be met as physicians adopt, implement, or upgrade using certified EHR technology. Get complete details on the three stages of meaningful use.
