Advocacy for Clarity in Nonphysical Practices

AOA President Martin S. Levine, DO, MPH, wrote to the Kentucky Board of Optometric Examiners on 7/28/11 to submit the AOA’s comments on Administrative Regulation 201 KAR 5:110, pursuant to SB 110, which would permit expanded therapeutic procedures for optometrists in the “Bluegrass State.”  The proposed regulation provides clinical and competence criteria for an optometrist to engage in expanded therapeutic procedures but, as written, are unclear, vague, and such criteria fall short of the standards necessary for an optometrist to so practice. The AOA believes that strict guidelines governing education and clinical experience are critical in ensuring optimal patient care and safety.  President Levine urged the Board to act in the best interests of patients by amending the regulation to clearly specify education, clinical, and exam requirements.
