Health Policy Notes

The 8/29/11 New York Times reported that researchers at Northwestern University may have found a cause for Lou Gehrig’s disease, AKA amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or ALS. Researchers found that failure of a certain cellular housekeeping agent that normally helps cells to clear away damaged proteins can aggregate inside nerve cells, which may be contributing to their destruction.

The Hill’s Healthwatch blog reported on 8/26/11 that the 27 states operating high-risk health insurance pools had enrolled 15,781 people with pre-existing conditions as of 4/30/11, compared to the federally-operated pool for the 23 other states and the District of Columbia, which had just 5,673 enrollees.

An Incentive Research Foundation survey reported by NewsMax.com on 8/29/11 found that the potential savings through preventative health care measures, such as workplace wellness programs, could be as high as $1.9 trillion per year.
