Health Policy Notes

A new Congressional Budget Office report released last week finds that overall spending on federal health care programs will more than double, from $847 billion (5.5% of the GDP) in 2012 to $1.8 trillion (7.3%) by 2022, according to the 1/31/12 Washington Examiner

In an effort to hold hospitals accountable for bringing down rates, CMS announced that HospitalCompare.gov will now include data about how often central line-associated bloodstream infections (which cause thousands of deaths and nearly $700 million in added costs each year) occur in hospital intensive care units across the country.

On 2/8/12, HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius announced creation of “The Strong Start,” an initiative that will offer $40 million in grants to test ways to reduce the increasing number of preterm births in America, which have grown over 36% over the last 20 years, and ensure more babies are born healthy.
