The Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) has published a proposed rule to combine two databanks—the National Practitioner Data Bank (NPDB) and the Health Care Integrity and Protection Data Bank (HIPDB). This proposal is designed to eliminate duplicative data reporting and access requirements by moving all data in the HIPDB into the NPDB and closing the HIPDB. Those having access to data in the system include hospitals and health care entities with formal peer review such as professional societies, state medical or dental boards, and state licensing or certification agencies. Data security standards currently in place to protect confidentiality of information in the data banks will be retained. HRSA is seeking comments on the proposed rule, which can be read online.
