The AOA Bureau on Federal Health Programs (BOFHP) convened in Washington, DC, today under the leadership of AOA Past President George Thomas, DO, Chair. The Bureau heard updates from the federal, state, and regulatory governmental areas and offered all osteopathic organization representatives in attendance the opportunity to give reports. Dan Green, MD, the Medical Officer in the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services’ (CMS) Office of Clinical Standards and Quality, presented information on the Physician Quality Reporting System and the benefits of physician quality reporting. Christine Bechtal of the National Partnership for Women & Families, the public member of the BOFHP, gave an overview of a survey her organization conducted regarding consumer opinions on electronic health records. John Castellani, President and CEO of the Pharmaceutical Researchers and Manufacturers of American (PhRMA), gave a presentation on the importance of pharmaceutical innovation in the 21st century.
