The 4/23/12 CQ HealthBeat reported that the Affordable Care Act will save Medicare more than $200 billion through 2016, largely through provider and Medicare Advantage payment reductions, according to a CMS Actuary report released last week. 

American Medical News reported on 4/23/12 that a growing number of medical students are choosing to get additional advanced degrees.  Combined enrollment nationwide in MD/PhD, DO/JD, and similar joint degree programs has increased 436% from 3,921 in 2002 to 5,349 in 2011.  

The 5/3/12 New York Times reported that 15 million babies are born premature each year, and the U.S. fared poorly in the first country-by-country global comparison of premature births. Although American hospitals excel at saving premature infants, the U.S. is similar to developing countries in the percentage of mothers who give birth before their babies are due.​
