Advocacy for Physician-led Care Delivery

AOA President Martin S. Levine, DO, wrote to the Louisiana State House Health and Welfare Committee on 5/3/12 in opposition to HB 951, a bill would provide an exemption for APRNs to practice without entering into a collaborative practice agreement with a licensed physician or dentist. The AOA strongly believes that the collaborative practice agreement requirement currently in place protects Louisiana citizens and ensures the delivery of high quality health care. Allowing a certificate to provide an exemption to this requirement would constitute an expansion in scope of practice for APRNs that could endanger Louisiana patients.  As our letter states, we support the team-based approach to care, but only the physician-led team has proven its ability to safely provide care to patients.
