President Nichols Supports Teaching Health Centers

AOA President Karen J. Nichols, DO, wrote to U.S. Representatives Fred Upton and Ranking Member Henry Waxman, Chair and Ranking Member of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, today to offer the AOA’s comments on HR 1216, which addresses Teaching Health Centers (THCs).  Specifically, this legislation would convert mandatory appropriations under the Affordable Care Act (ACA) into an authorization subject to the annual appropriations process.  The AOA strongly supported the creation of THCs as a means of enhancing our nation’s GME training capacity.  President Nichols’ letter expressed our belief that, in order for THCs to succeed and meet their policy objectives, there must be a predictable and equitable financing structure, not a yearly debate over funding. Additionally, we are concerned that shifting the THC program from mandatory to discretionary spending would be a disincentive for entities wishing to pursue the creation of long-term, community-based GME programs.  Read more AOA comments in the letter below.
