As reported last week, President Levine and many leaders from New Jersey’s osteopathic community testified at a 6/14/12 New Jersey State Senate Higher Education Committee hearing against a bill recently introduced that would move UMDJN-SOM from UMDNJ to Rowan University in Southern New Jersey. Despite Committee members’ concerns about the cost of the legislation as well as its implications on the SOM’s accreditation, the Committee unanimously approved the bill. It will be heard in the Budget Committee meeting in Trenton today. President Levine sent a letter to the Chair of that Committee last week expressing our opposition to this plan. Our main focus is to keep all components of UMDNJ intact, and we have been working with NJAOPS to support their efforts by preparing amendments that would allow for a more independent SOM, with autonomous oversight and funding.
