In Memoriam of Osteopathic Medical Pioneer

AOA member Stanley Schiowitz, DO, FAAO, passed away yesterday after a brief illness. Dr. Schiowitz was one of the founders of the New York College of Osteopathic Medicine (NYCOM) and served as its Dean from 1991-2002 and Dean Emeritus thereafter.  One of the charter recipients of the AOA's Great Pioneer in Osteopathic Medicine recognition, Dr. Schiowitz was the first OPP and OMM Chair at NYCOM and a mentor to many osteopathic medical students at the school. He developed Facilitated Positional Release, an OMT technique now taught at most of the COMs. He was Past President of the New York State Osteopathic Medical Society. Dr. Schiowitz was predeceased by his wife, Lillian, and is survived by his son Josh Schiowitz, his daughter, Ellen Ellis, DO, her husband Keith, and his grand-daughter Justine Ellis.  Shalom.

In Memoriam of Osteopathic Medical Pioneer

Dr. Schiowitz was a wonderful mentor and role model.  He was brilliant, funny, kind and tolerant.  It was a privelege to have been taught by him and to have worked with him treating patients.  I will miss him.
