National Collaboration through Coalitions and Initiatives

President Levine and other AOA leaders participated in the Charter Meeting of the Coalition for Accountability on 8/16/11 in Washington, DC. The purpose of the Coalition is to advance quality and safety of patient care by providing a forum for dialogue among participating organizations about ways to enhance physician accountability through continuous improvement in medical education, training, and practice.  The Coalition includes representatives from national organizations involved in physician licensure, accreditation, certification, and assessment, including the AAMC, the NBOME, the ABMS, the ACGME, and the FSMB, among others.  Discussions focused on how work together to address issues such as physician workforce, GME expansion, and electronic health records. In other news, Katherine Galluzzi, DO, Chair of the AOA Council on Palliative Care Issues (CPCI), represented the AOA at the Pain Action Initiative: A National Strategy (PAINS) meeting on 8/15-16/11 in Kansas City, Mo.  Led by the nonprofit Center for Practical Bioethics, the ongoing PAINS meetings seek to address the under-treatment of chronic pain, a health problem that research suggests affects 75-150 million Americans.​

Collaboration is key. Speaking of which; there is a great article in the "AMA News" 8/22/'11 highlighting rural practice DOs and the efforts to train them at Rocky Vista University.
