FDA Issues Plan to Limit Antibiotics in Animal Feed

On 4/10/12, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a guidance that aligns with AOA House of Delegates-approved policy.  The FDA guidance to industry addresses the judicious use of medically important antimicrobial drugs in food-producing animals, including all antibiotics in meat and poultry production.  The guidance asks that the drugs be used to treat diseases, not to promote growth.  While the guidelines are voluntary, this is viewed as another important step in reducing the development of drug-resistant bacteria in humans.   In 2007, the AOA House of Delegates approved a policy that supports banning feed additive uses of antibiotics for non-therapeutic uses in animals. ​
