President Levine Urges Safety in Rx Laws

AOA President Martin S. Levine, DO, wrote to the California State Senate's Business, Professions and Economic Development Committee on 5/3/12 in opposition to SB 1446, a bill that would allow naturopaths to prescribe natural and synthetic hormones and epinephrine to treat anaphylaxis, an expansion in scope of practice that the AOA believes could put California patients at risk. According to the Mayo Clinic, at least 35 different medicines may cause adverse interactions or side effects when used alongside epinephrine. Naturopaths prescribing “natural-based" medications lack the necessary education or training to recognize these dangerous interactions, hence our letter urged the Senate to consider these dangers and vote against the bill.
