Before breaking into reference committees, the House of Delegates held an Awards Luncheon to honor leaders of the osteopathic medical profession. Pete Schmelzer, CAE, Executive Director of the American College of Osteopathic Family Physicians, and Mario E.J. Lanni, Executive Director of the Pennsylvania Osteopathic Medical Association for the last 27 years, won this year’s Bob E. Jones, CAE, Award in recognition of their outstanding efforts to continually uphold the AOA and improve the osteopathic medical profession as a whole. The Ohio Osteopathic Association and the American Osteopathic College of Radiology were each presented with the first-ever the Strategic Team Award and Recognition, known as “STAR,” given by the AOA Strategic Planning Committee to honor affiliate organizations that make significant contributions to advancing the profession-wide objectives identified in the AOA Strategic Plan. Wyatt Myers, a freelance writer for EverydayHealth.com and DaddyMDGuides.com, won the inaugural AOA Award for Excellence in Health Journalism, which recognizes journalists who are dedicated to helping Americans better understand their health and the delivery of health care. Finally, Royce K. Keilers, DO, David W. Smith, DO, Don Jablonski, DO, Barbara E. Walker, DO, and President Levine were inducted as the 2012 Class of AOA Great Pioneers in Osteopathic Medicine.
