Robert Bentley, Governor of Alabama, recently stepped in to resolve an issue of discrimination concerning DOs. Governor Bentley wrote to the Commissioner of the Alabama Department of Corrections on 2/11/11 regarding a “medical clearance” cover letter apparently used by the department that did not recognize DOs as physicians. His letter advised that “DOs and MDs have equal authority mandated by statue and are to be treated the same,” as defined by both Alabama and federal law. He further asked the Department of Corrections to correct its practice of “discriminating against osteopathic physicians immediately.” Have you faced discrimination? Let me know!
