Joining Forces with our Service Members

AOA member Darren Sommer, DO, MPH, FACOI, who received a Bronze Star for his service in Afghanistan, co-authored a study, which looked at service members’ transition back home after active duty. The study, “Women and Men Who Have Served in Afghanistan/Iraq: Coming Home,” brought to light the challenges that our service men and women face when they return to home life. It also highlighted the importance of health care providers understanding that the effects of war must be taken into consideration when treating these patients.

It’s reasons such as this that the AOA proudly participates in the Joining Forces Initiative. As supporters of this initiative, we pledge our commitment to ensure that physicians and other health care providers understand the unique physical and mental health care needs of our service members, veterans and their families. It’s the least we can do for those who have sacrificed so much.
