(Washington, DC) – The American Osteopathic Association (AOA) congratulates Representatives John Sullivan (R-OK) and David Scott (D-GA) on the introduction of the “Healthcare Truth and Transparency Act” (HR 451). This legislation would empower consumers by ensuring that they have access to information on the education and training of those individuals providing their care, thereby aiding all Americans in becoming better consumers of health care.
Given the complexity of health care today, HR 451 will provide much needed clarification and resources to address patient confusion in the health care marketplace. Recent studies confirm increasing patient confusion regarding the many types of health care providers - including physicians, technicians, nurses, physician assistants and other allied providers - engaged in providing services in health care settings. All of these providers play an important and distinct role in the health care delivery system. However, ambiguous provider nomenclature and related advertisements and marketing are exacerbating patient uncertainty. By providing more information, consumers are empowered to make decisions that are best for them or their family.
Providing quality health care is the goal of all osteopathic physicians. To this end, the AOA supports initiatives that aim to enhance the ability of physicians and other health care providers to improve upon the quality of care provided and we believe this legislation is consistent with this goal.
