Joey S. Rottman, DO, is an AOA board-certified obstetrician and gynecologist at the Greater Lawrence Family Health Center in Lawrence, Mass.
Dr. Rottman, who trained and performed with the famed Second City and Improv Olympic acting groups, used to teach improvisation techniques to osteopathic medical students at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey-School of Osteopathic Medicine (UMDNJ-SOM) in Stratford. The techniques are designed to help students become better listeners and ultimately better doctors. The exercises include a game where students are not allowed to speak and must use non-verbal communication to understand how their partner is feeling.
Dr. Rottman serves on the Massachusetts Osteopathic Society Board of Trustees. He also is a member of the Regional Osteopathic Medical Education New England development committee.
A graduate of the Des Moines (Iowa) University—College of Osteopathic Medicine, Dr. Rottman was voted as Family Medicine Resident Educator of the Year in 2008 by UMDNJ-SOM family medicine residents.
