17th Annual BIOM International Seminar: “Innovation in Osteopathic Education and Outreach”

The Bureau of International Osteopathic Medicine (BIOM) partnered with DOCARE International to present the 17th Annual International Seminar, “Innovation in Osteopathic Education and Outreach,” on Oct. 17 during OMED 2015 in Orlando, Florida. The program focused on development of global osteopathic medical programs from undergraduate outreach and rotations to residency programs and beyond.

The seminar addressed ways that osteopathic medicine is being integrated into international medical programs, as well as safety and best practices for providing outreach and rotations throughout the globe. Rear Admiral Joyce Johnson, DO, provided the keynote address and brought her vast experience in providing care around the globe to the seminar attendees.

Student Poster Competition and Session

During the seminar, BIOM, Student Osteopathic Medical Association (SOMA) and, new this year, the Council of Osteopathic Student Government President’s (COSGP) hosted the Student Poster Competition and Session, which focused on the international medical experiences of osteopathic students and physicians. The poster exhibit was open to anyone from the profession. Any student that completed international outreach projects and/or research since October 2014 were invited to submit an abstract and participate in the poster competition. Abstracts were submitted for two categories: 1) broad outreach experiences and 2) research completed while on outreach programs.

BIOM, SOMA and COSGP representatives evaluated the abstracts and the two 1st place authors from each category presented their work at the seminar. All students who submitted abstacts were invited to display a poster during the seminar.
